Midrand originally grew around "Halfway House," a 19th-century staging post established in 1890 for commuters travelling between Johannesburg and Pretoria. Officially established as an independent municipality in 1981, it was later incorporated into the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in 2000.
Today, Midrand has transformed into a massive economic hub that has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. It serves as a major commercial center hosting the headquarters of numerous large corporations, as well as landmark developments like the Mall of Africa and the Gallagher Convention Centre.

What it looks like: This ballot lists individual names alongside party logos (or "Independent" markers).
Who you are voting for: You are voting directly for a specific person to be the Ward Councillor for your area (e.g., Ward 112, which covers Noordwyk).
The goal: This is the person you want to go to when the streetlights are out, the bins aren't collected, or the roads have potholes. The person with the most votes in your ward wins the seat.
What it looks like: This ballot only lists political parties and their logos—there are no individual candidate names or faces.
Who you are voting for: You are voting for the political party you want to control the entire City of Johannesburg Council.
The goal: These votes are pooled together across the whole of Johannesburg. Seats are given based on the percentage of the total vote they get (proportional representation). The party (or coalition of parties) that gets the majority of seats will then choose the Executive Mayor and run the metro's broader budget and infrastructure.
